Meta introduces an internal fact-checking program for its latest social networking platform, Threads. This feature serves as Threads’ response to compete with its main competitor, X, formerly known as Twitter.
The fact-checking feature is a preemptive effort to combat the spread of misinformation amidst the US election information increasingly proliferating across social media platforms, including Threads. Previously, Threads relied on fact-checking networks from its siblings, Instagram and Facebook, to verify factual information and curb fake news on its platform.
Now, Chief of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, announced, as quoted by Android Headlines on Thursday (16/5/2024), that Threads has successfully developed Meta’s third-party fact-checking tool capable of reviewing and evaluating content directly.
However, Adam Mosseri has not disclosed any details regarding when exactly the new fact-checking program for Threads will be launched. Additionally, it remains unclear whether the fake news checking tool will be available worldwide or only in the US region.
This new feature will aid Threads in identifying misinformation, fake news, and even false conspiracies on social media during the US elections.
Meta’s social media platform had announced its intention to bring a fact-checking program to Threads in December last year. Nevertheless, it is still unclear which third-party organizations have collaborated with Meta to fact-check content on Threads.
Another Features from Threads
To cater to users and provide comfort while using Threads, Meta plans to introduce a feature to hide words on the platform.
This feature will be called Hidden Words. As the name suggests, this new Threads feature can be used to hide offensive words. Quoted from Engadget, on Saturday (27/4/2024), Threads will allow users to filter words, emojis, and even sentences just like on Instagram.
This feature will be activated by default and filter out offensive words or phrases, as well as content deemed uninteresting. Threads users can also add undesirable words to be filtered, such as harassment, bullying, insults, or other terms considered offensive.
To add words to be hidden, users can do so by opening the Manage Custom Words and Phrases option, then typing the words they don’t want to see on Threads. In addition to introducing the hide words feature, Threads can also allow users to control other users who can quote their posts.
