Since this initial launch, Android has continued to evolve as a smartphone operating system, releasing newer versions named after sweet treats and continuously innovating up to the current Android version 15.

Looking back, the first smartphone to incorporate the Android operating system was the HTC Dream in 2008, which used Android 1.0. The following year, Android 1.1 Bender (Beta) was released along with the Google Play Store, initially called Android Market. Android 1.5 Cupcake, released in the same year, introduced features like widgets and an on-screen keyboard, along with several other enhancements for devices running the Android OS. Subsequent updates included Android 1.6 Donut, which added data and app search features and improved battery information systems.

Android versions 2.0, 2.2, and 2.3, released in 2009, 2010, and 2011, respectively, brought additional features that marked the beginning of advanced smartphone operating systems. These versions introduced capabilities like flash support, digital zoom, and Wi-Fi connectivity, laying the foundation for modern smartphone development.

In the same period, Android released versions 3.0 and 4.0, which brought new features such as bluetooth tethering and a combined phone and tablet operating system, offering new lock screen designs and video effects in the camera.

A year later, Android released the highly memorable 4.1 Jellybean (2012) and 4.2 KitKat (2013), which provided a faster operating system and more interactive notifications. The introduction of emoji in the keyboard and more efficient memory usage were notable innovations.

Android 5.0 Lollipop (2014) saw a complete overhaul of the user interface with material design, pop-up notifications, priority mode, and screen pinning. The following year’s Android 6.0 Marshmallow (2015) introduced a battery-saving sleep mode, fingerprint reader support, USB type C compatibility, and 4K mode for available apps. Android 7.0 Nougat (2016) allowed users to delete multiple apps at once.

In 2017, Android 8.0 Oreo enabled users to multitask by opening multiple apps on the phone screen and offered improved security. Android 9.0 Pie (2018) enhanced the operating system’s speed while conserving battery life and introduced AI technology to recommend relevant apps and a search feature on the home screen without needing to open a browser. Android 10 Q (2019) provided a dark theme for the screen background for greater comfort and transformed notifications into bubble-like alerts.
