Coursera Global Skills Report 2025: Indonesia Ranks 47th Globally, Prioritizes GenAI Mastery

Coursera, the world’s leading online learning platform, has officially released its 2025 Global Skills Report, highlighting Indonesia’s growing emphasis on Generative AI (GenAI) education. According to the report, course enrollments in GenAI by Indonesian learners have surged by an impressive 237% year-over-year (YoY)—far surpassing the Asia Pacific average of 132% and the global average of 195%.

This spike underscores Indonesia’s accelerated push toward digital skill development and solidifies its position as a rising hub for AI innovation and workforce transformation in the region.

Drawing insights from over 170 million global learners across more than 100 countries, the seventh edition of the Global Skills Report identifies emerging skill trends based on learner behavior. In 2025, Indonesia ranks 47th worldwide and 12th in the Asia Pacific region in overall skills proficiency.

Indonesian learners have achieved competency levels of 41% in business, 58% in technology, and 60% in data science. Notably, Indonesia ranks 43rd in Coursera’s newly launched AI Maturity Index—an indicator of a country’s readiness in AI research, innovation ecosystems, and digital talent cultivation.

These achievements are bolstered by national strategies such as the Indonesia National AI Strategy 2045 and the Merdeka Belajar–Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative, which aim to reform education and workforce systems. According to the Future of Jobs Report 2025 by the World Economic Forum, 83% of Indonesian companies anticipate major operational changes by 2030—significantly higher than the global average of 60%.

This trend is echoed in Coursera’s learner data, which shows rising demand in key workplace skills: enrollments in Customer Service increased by 53%, Curiosity by 51%, AI and Machine Learning by 48%, and Creative Thinking by 40%. These shifts reflect the emergence of a modern economy that values a balanced skill set across digital, business, and interpersonal domains.

Coursera Global Skills Report 2025: Best for Indonesia

Indonesia is actively preparing a digitally literate workforce. AI has become a strategic focus for employers, and learners are responding by equipping themselves with GenAI skills to stay competitive,” said Eklavya Bhave, Head of Asia Pacific at Coursera.”

From national strategies to forward-looking education policies, we’re witnessing a strong commitment to equipping the population with a combination of technical, business, and human-centric skills. Coursera is proud to support this transformation by partnering across education, industry, and government to develop inclusive, job-ready talent.”

Key Findings for Indonesia:

  • GenAI Takes Center Stage, But Gender Gaps Persist: GenAI course enrollments in Indonesia increased by 237% YoY. However, women accounted for only 28% of these enrollments, despite making up 49% of Coursera’s total learner base in Indonesia. This reflects a need for greater female participation in emerging tech fields.
  • Credential Demand Is Rising: Enrollment in Professional Certificates grew by 41%, indicating a strong interest in outcome-based learning programs. Yet, women comprised just 26% of those seeking these job credentials, suggesting gender disparity in access to professional upskilling opportunities.
  • Learners Embrace Technical and Business Skills: Among the most popular skills studied were Deep Learning, Machine Learning Applications, Corporate Accounting, and Business Process Management. This cross-disciplinary learning aligns with Indonesia’s national development agenda.
  • Soft Skills Gain Importance: Indonesian learners are increasingly prioritizing soft skills such as critical thinking, curiosity, and creative thinking—competencies vital for thriving in AI-driven work environments.

With over 2 million learners and a median learner age of 30, Indonesia boasts a youthful, adaptive population poised to compete on the global stage. However, to meet its ambitious target of cultivating 9 million digital talents by 2045, the country must generate approximately 600,000 new digital workers each year. Currently, Indonesian universities produce only 200,000 to 400,000 graduates with digital skills annually.

Addressing this gap will require strategic, collaborative national efforts—such as expanding public-private partnerships, embedding micro-credentials into higher education, and widening access to online learning platforms.

Increasing the participation of women in tech is also critical—not only to promote gender equality, but to fully unlock Indonesia’s digital economic potential. A more inclusive digital talent pipeline will accelerate innovation, productivity, and sustainable growth across sectors.

Methodology

The Global Skills Report 2025 is based on data from 170 million Coursera learners between March 2024 and February 2025. The report identifies in-demand skills across six global regions and over 100 countries, aiming to guide business leaders, policymakers, and educators in navigating rapid global transformation. Each country’s ranking is determined by learner proficiency across 274 skills in business, technology, and data science.

Coursera’s platform data is integrated with third-party sources such as the World Bank and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for a comprehensive outlook. For the first time, Coursera has introduced the AI Maturity Index—an assessment of national preparedness in AI learning, research, and innovation—drawing from data provided by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
