In today’s world, smartphones have become essential tools that assist in various activities for many people. Users rely on smartphones for communication, accessing information, entertainment, content creation, and even for work-related tasks.
Due to this dependency, users often keep their smartphones running without turning them off. However, the National Security Agency (NSA) of the United States recently highlighted the importance of restarting smartphones for security purposes.
Quoting Gizchina, this information is based on a document titled “Cybersecurity Practices” from the NSA. The document recommends a seemingly simple yet crucial security measure, which is to power off and restart smartphones at least once a week.
Restarting smartphones is said to not only resolve glitches or performance issues but also to protect the device from potential cybersecurity threats. A restart ensures that all processes and applications are completely stopped, potentially disrupting any malicious activities running in the background.
While the NSA does not delve into specific technical details, experts believe that regularly restarting devices can disrupt ongoing processes, which could be exploited by certain types of cyber attacks.
Restarting Smartphone to Avoiding Zero-Click
Meanwhile, zero-click exploitation represents a more dangerous form of attack. This is because such attacks require no user interaction whatsoever to gain access to the device.
Vulnerable applications can be exploited simply by visiting compromised websites. While updating applications is crucial in mitigating threats, regularly restarting the device can also limit the vulnerability window by clearing all temporary files or processes that could be exploited.
Although restarting is important, smartphone users should also keep their software updated, remain vigilant against suspicious links or attachments, and exercise caution when installing apps from unofficial sources.
Avoiding what’s called Spearphishing
Moreover, restarting your smartphone once a week can provide protection against two types of cyber attacks, namely spearphishing and zero-click exploitation.
Spearphishing attacks target individuals through emails or private messages designed to deceive them into revealing sensitive information or clicking on dangerous links. By disrupting background processes, spearphishing attempts can be thwarted. These spearphishing attempts rely on maintaining connections or exploiting pre-loaded malware.
